DeSales Senior Randy Sturm Named Academic All-American

Senior Randy Sturm, of North Cape May, N.J., and a member of the DeSales University men's soccer team, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American College Division Men's Soccer Second-Team, as announced on Monday (Nov. 20) afternoon. Sturm is just the fourth athlete in DeSales athletics history to be named an Academic All-American.

Only athletes who are honored on Academic All-District First-Team's are forwarded to the CoSIDA national committee for consideration on the All-American Team. He joins Gina Lucrezi (Track & Field/Cross-Country, 2005), Mark Watermasysk (Basketball, 1999-00) and Thomas Ferguson (At-Large/Cross-Country, 1986-87) as the only DSU athletes to be named Academic All-Americans.

Sturm was named to the Academic All-District II First-Team for the second straight year this season. The District II College Division consists of all non NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve on his/her team.

Sturm had a tremendous senior year leading the Bulldogs in scoring with 27 goals and 10 assists for 64 points. He set single-season records for goals (27) and points (64) and finished his career as the all-time scoring leader with 139 points. Sturm is also the all-time leader with 25 career assists, ranks second all-time with 57 goals and finished the season ranked fourth in the country in goals per game (1.29 GPG) and points per game (3.05 PPG).

Sturm was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year and earned All-Freedom Conference First-Team honors for the third straight season. He was named the Freedom Conference Playoffs Most Valuable Player; earned Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors five times and was named ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Week twice.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 13-5-3 overall record and won their second straight Freedom Conference Championship. DSU received an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, falling to the two-time defending National Champions, Messiah College, 2-0 in the opening round.

Academically, Sturm has also excelled with a 3.43 cumulative GPA as an elementary education major. He will be named to his third MASCAC Fall All-Academic team later this month and is a Dean's list member.
