The 7th annual "Be An Angel" supplement, a special holiday insert that honors organizations, agencies and programs that provide support to children and their families, featured a profile of Michelle Fernandez, '09, chemistry major from Allentown, Pa., who has participated in the Hispanic Initiative Program. Now in its twelfth year, the program is designed to provide Hispanic students from Lehigh and Northampton Counties to develop learning skills in a college environment. Fernandez, a native of the Dominican Republic, took part in the program, both as a middle and high school student, and then as a college student, went on to serve as a counselor in the program during the summer of 2006. Her positive experience while in the program, while a high school student, reinforced her desire to go to college. She decided to attend DeSales because she liked the campus and lovely environment, and found people were very helpful and caring. She is the first in her family to attend college. Eventually, she would like to go into medicine and practice pediatrics.
