Story by Kristen Ziegler on Character U, the new, innovative, first-year experience program at DeSales, includes comments from Jaime Gerhart, director of social outreach at DeSales, and DeSales students. According to Gerhart, the opportunity to get out and work with community service organizations earlier than in the past has really helped and inspired students. Gerhart said that the freshmen students already are becoming leaders in community service organizations. Making the service activities part of freshmen organization worked well with students. "We were able to get together even though we didn't really know each other," said Lauren Escol, a freshman nursing major from Baltimore. It proved memorable to the students as even months after the orientation service project, students still talk about the experience.
