"Globalization, Higher Education, and the Future of DeSales University," Focus of Special Programs Held in March
Special presentations, as part of the series, "Globalization, Higher Education, and the Future of DeSales University," will be held on campus during March.
On Tuesday, March 27, Dr. William Hunter, director of the Global Union and Lehigh University / United National Partnership, will speak on "Assessing Global Competence." The program will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the Hurd Room of the White Pavilion in the DeSales University Center. The talk by Hunter is the second event this month in the series. All members of the DeSales community are invited to participate. Father Bernard O'Connor, DeSales president, will host the event.
Recently, Dr. Hunter made a presentation on this subject at the national meeting of the Association of International Educational Administrators in Washington D.C. Dr. Hunter's dissertation in 2004 on defining global competence vaulted him to national prominence in the field of international education. He recently published on this topic in two leading journals, and he will co-host a panel on globalization and the workforce of the future with Dr. Galen Godbey, associate to the President for globalization at DeSales, at the NAFSA Association of International Educators annual meeting in Minneapolis in June.
Dr. Hunter is also Lehigh's representative to the United Nations, Lehigh having received NGO status with the UN under Dr. Hunter's leadership. DeSales has adopted a definition of global competence inspired by Dr. Hunter's work, but which recognizes the importance of promoting human solidarity through the development of such competence.
The inaugural presentation in the series was held on March 19. The program focused on globalization's impact on elementary and secondary education and how it will shape the capacities and expectations of entering freshmen. The featured speaker was Dr. George White, head of Lehigh University's Educational Leadership Program, who addressed globalization's impact upon K through 12 education in the United States and elsewhere.
Dr. White also serves as director of the Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship, directs a technology-based doctoral program for headmasters of international schools, and is a recipient of the Linbach teaching award at Lehigh. Accompanying Dr. White were 20 school principals from Kuwait, who are visiting Lehigh to learn about administrative methods and teaching/learning strategies in the United States.
