More than 800 Area Students to Celebrate Environment Day 2007 at DeSales, April 24 and 25

Environment Day 2007
Lehigh Valley area elementary school students will take part in activities celebrating Environment Day 2007 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24 and 25, in Billera Hall at DeSales University. Sponsored by Just Born Candies, the DeSales Student Government Association and the DeSales Natural Science Club, the goal of the event is to educate second and third graders on different environmental topics. About 400 area students are expected is day, with approximately 800 students taking part in activities, during the two-day event.

"The students will be able to participate in several stations that will educate them on current environmental issues and also include some fun activities," said Dr. Francis Mayville, associate professor of chemistry at DeSales, and director of the Natural Science Club. "They will learn about recycling, outdoor life, forest animals, endangered species, among other things."

Upon arrival at DeSales, the children will be divided into different groups. Each group will rotate through each program every 10 minutes. Most presenters are DeSales students.

The Natural Science Club at DeSales has been hosting this event since spring 2001. This year, students from Palmer, Parkway Manor, United Friends, Cetronia, St. Michael's, Springfield, Western Salisbury, William Penn, Clearview, and Freemansburg schools will be participating.

"The event teaches students how to make the world a healthier place to live for the future," said Nicole Korovich '07, President of the Natural Science Club. "The club wants to use the event as an opportunity to instill the importance of recycling and water conservation into the minds of young people."

For more information, contact Dr. Francis Mayville, associate professor of chemistry at DeSales, at 610-282-1100, ext. 1382.
