Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at DeSales to Host Discussion on Imus Controversy, Thurs., April 26

The Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at DeSales University will host a Center Valley Forum, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 26, in the Hurd Science Center Auditorium on the Center Valley campus titled "Do Words Really Matter?"

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a panel discussion on the recent controversy sparked by radio personality Don Imus and his on-air depiction of the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

Panelists include: Jim DiSousa, news director at WDIY, Bethlehem's public radio station; Esther M. Lee, president of the Bethlehem branch of the NAACP and Marvin Satchell and Sedale Walton, two African American DeSales University men's basketball players.

"The Imus imbroglio raises a host of social questions," said the Reverend Thomas Dailey, OSFS, director of the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture. "Did his comic characterization cross the lines into racist and sexist slander? Should a few words cost him his job, and why now if not before? Is public outcry an appropriate response or did it fan the flames of social division?"

Panelists will each present their viewpoint on whether and how our words matter in our society, after which they will field questions from the audience.

The Center Valley Forum is a regularly scheduled series on a current topic of social controversy. The purpose of this series is to examine public issues and concerns of interest to the Lehigh Valley community, particularly as they impact our culture in law and society, science and healthcare, communications and media, commerce and finance, and religion and faith.

Established in 2000, the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture promotes the interaction of faith and culture through academic initiatives that focus on the authentic integration of social concerns and gospel values.
