Labuda Center at DeSales Marks 25th Anniversary with Special Celebration, Sat., April 28
It's "Silver" for Labuda! To honor the occasion, the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a series of special events on Saturday, April 28. The evening's activities will include a reception and dinner for invited guests, and the launching of a video tribute to Father Gerard Schubert, OSFS, founding chairperson of DeSales' Performing and Fine Arts Department in 1969 and founder of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival in 1992.
Also, Congressman Charles R. Dent (R-15) will present two Congressional certificates, prior to the curtain for the current Act I production of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods." One certificate honors the Labuda Center and its contribution to the cultural life of the Lehigh Valley area. The second honors Father Schubert.
Following the performance, there will be a champagne dessert reception, during which there will be the unveiling of and renaming of the Arena Stage, in honor of Fr. Schubert and the Schubert family.
The video of Fr. Schubert celebrates his vision and details the evolution of the department. DeSales' Performing and Fine Arts Department has the distinction of being the largest at the university, with more than 300 students majoring in theatre, dance and TV/Film programs, and 32 full-time faculty and staff members. It also hosts the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival.
