DeSales University Announces Winners of Third Annual National Catholic Essay Contest
DeSales University has announced the winners of the third annual National Catholic Essay Contest. Sponsored by DeSales, the competition recognizes excellence in writing by young people that share the distinctiveness of Catholic thought. The theme of this year's competition was "The God of Disaster." The contest, held earlier in the year, was open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors across the country.
The students who participated in the contest were required to write an essay addressing the theme, "The God of Disaster," and the implications of Christians believing in a good and loving God in the face of horrific suffering. The essay had to reflect the student's individual voice and interpretations of additional sources. Essays were to be 1,500 to 2,000 words in length.
The winners are:
- First place, Sara Veazey, of Middletown, Del., who attends St. Mark's High School. Veazey won a $2,500 scholarship to DeSales
- Second place, Michelle McCarthy, of Washington Township, N.J. who is home-schooled. McCarthy won a $1,500 scholarship to DeSales
- Third place, Lauren Welsh, of Allentown, Pa., who attends Allentown Central Catholic High School. Welsh won a $1,000 scholarship to DeSales
The essays were reviewed by philosophy and theology faculty members at DeSales, using a point system in the areas of scholarly depth, readability, consistency with Catholic thought, strength of thesis throughout the paper, originality, and consistency with the theme. The winners were among six candidates competing for the top prizes.
