The Hon. John Ashcroft, Attorney General of the United States from 2001 to 2005, will speak at DeSales University on Tuesday, October 23. Thomas J. Furphy Lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Billera Hall. The public talk will be followed by a Q & A session.
The event is open to the public free of charge, but tickets are required. For ticket reservations, please call 610-282-1100, ext. 1364.
Earlier in the day, Ashcroft will take part in a student discussion session in the Gerald White Pavilion of the DeSales University Center. The student-only session is not open to the public.
The theme of the prestigious lecture series is "National and International Problems." The series is named in memory of Father Thomas J. Furphy, O.S.F.S., 1912-1982, who distinguished himself as a teacher of "National Problems," during a career in education that spanned 38 years, and included schools in the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Allentown areas.
Attorney General Ashcroft is considered to be one of the most high-profile and experienced Attorneys General in the nation's history. Under his leadership, the Justice Department was reorganized to focus on a tough anti-terrorism campaign. During his tenure, the Department also established the Corporate Fraud Task Force, targeted illegal drugs, and violent crime and gun crime was at a record low.
Raised in Springfield, Missouri, Ashcroft graduated from Yale University with honors and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago. Prior to entering public service, he taught business law at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. He authored a book honoring his father, Lessons from a Father to His Son, and co-authored multiple editions of two college law textbooks with his wife, Janet.
Ashcroft began his career in public service in 1973, as Missouri Auditor. He served as Governor of Missouri from 1985 through 1993. He was voted Chairman of the non-partisan national Governor's Association in 1991.
In 1994, Ashcroft was elected to the U.S. Senate. During his career as senator, he worked to reduce crime and safeguard the rights of crime victims. He also was an advocate for updated U.S. banking laws, the protection of consumer privacy, and increased personal responsibility on the part of consumer.
Ashcroft is the author of Never Again, in which he provides a look at his role in the turbulent time after 9/11, his take on the dangers to and within America from outside forces, and what he did to repair the serious breaches in our country's security.
Currently, Ashcroft serves as Chairman of The Ashcroft Group, LLC which provides confidential strategic consulting and crisis counseling to major international corporations.
