Tigh Savercool Named the 2007 - 2008 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales University

Tigh Savercool, a DeSales University senior majoring in sport management and finance, has been named the 2007 - 2008 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales University. The McGowan Charitable Fund awards one tuition scholarship - either undergraduate or graduate - to each school selected annually to participate. More than 60 colleges and universities were invited to take part in the McGowan Scholars program.

McGowan Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic performance, grade point average, a submitted essay, and other selection criteria. Savercool is a Dean's List student and has a GPA of 3.25. He is a member of the Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society and currently serves as president. He also is a member of the DeSales Sport Management Society.

"I am honored to receive the McGowan Scholarship and feel very optimistic about the future and the challenges ahead," said Savercool. "I look forward to the opportunity to further develop the skills I have acquired through my DeSales education, as I pursue a successful career in business."

Savercool is the third student in DeSales University history to receive a McGowan Scholarship. Last year's recipient was Phillip Yetter, '07, of Saylorsburg, Pa., who earned a bachelor's degree in management and finance. The first DeSales McGown Scholar was Glenn Berdela, Jr., '06, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., who earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and management information technology.

A native of Millerstown, Pa., Savercool is the son of Ed and Kim Savercool. He is a graduate of Greenwood High School.

Savercool has been involved in numerous community activities. In June, he served as coordinator and director of the first annual 3v3 basketball tournament for the CODY (Christian Organization for Distinguished Youth) Foundation, which provides financial support for Christian pursuits of individuals and groups. Savercool organized the basketball fundraiser in memory of a friend who was killed in a car accident. The event, held in Newport, Pa., in June, featured eight teams with 50 participants who helped raise more than $1,000.

Other community activities have included volunteer work at the community recycling center, delivering food to the needy, and serving as a weekly volunteer at New Harvest Community Church.

Also, Savercool, a sports enthusiast, has worked as a youth soccer and youth basketball coach at many local summer camps. He also was a volunteer for the Special Olympics.

The McGowan Scholars program is part of the McGowan Charitable Fund, established in 1992. The Fund provides financial assistance to those organizations and causes that reflect the visions, concerns and lifetime experiences of its founder, William G. McGowan, a pioneer in the telecommunications industry and the founder and longtime chairman of MCI Communications Corp.

The scholars program awards selected colleges and universities with scholarships to help students who wish to pursue a business education. Colleges and universities that have business programs accredited by the International Association for Management education (AACSB) or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) may apply for the scholarship program.

DeSales University, in Center Valley, Pa., is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
