Center Valley, Pa., -- (November 12, 2002) - Beginning in the fall of 2003, DeSales University will begin offering a bachelor of science degree in sport and exercise science.
Designed for students interested in the fields of sports, fitness and wellness, the program offers both a major and minor preparing students for professional certification to enter the rapidly growing market for training and rehabilitation specialists in private, corporate and government fitness centers, in hospitals and in private practice.
The curriculum is science-based ensuring students the broadest range of career and post-graduate options. This includes preparation for certification by a variety of professional organizations, particularly the American College of Sports Medicine, at all levels accessible with a bachelor's degree. Courses in the program cover topics in exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, sport nutrition, fitness assessment exercise prescription and sport management. An integrated internship during the last two years of the program ensures practical experience with a broad client base and proves important access to extensive career opportunities. These include employment as managers and trainer in corporate, government and private fitness centers, personal trainers, exercise technicians and rehabilitation specialists in hospital and clinical laboratories and training centers and strength/fitness coaches with teams and sports organizations.
The elective structure is intentionally flexible, allowing students to tailor their degree programs to meet personal interest and career goals so those who choose to continue their education in related areas are prepared for a wide variety of post graduate education, including master's and Ph.D. programs in biomechanics, kinesiology, exercise physiology, physical therapy and medical school. Unlike many programs that focus on preparation for graduate education, the DeSales University sport and exercise science major permits students to structure their programs either to enter a working career directly upon graduation or to continue for further education.
