DeSales University's Pace Team to Kick Off "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," Monday, April 7 at 5:00 P.M.

DeSales University will host "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," Monday, April 7, in an effort to promote awareness for the prevention of sexual assault. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lehigh Valley Hospital's Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFE). Sponsored by the University's PACE (Peers, Advising, Counseling, Educating) team, the one-mile walk will begin and conclude at the DeSales University Center. Registration and sign-in is at 4:30 p.m., followed by the walk at 5:00 p.m.

As part of the event, male and female participants will walk one mile around the DeSales campus in women's heeled or flat shoes.

" 'Walk a Mile' is a fun way to bring the campus and community together for a good cause," said Sarah Ball, junior communications major, who helped organize the event. "We hope the event will raise awareness and further the effort to eliminate sexual assault and gender violence."

"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" is a national event that was started in 2001 by Frank Baird in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valley, California. The intent of the first walk was to raise awareness and funds for rape crisis centers. The main goal of the organization is to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Since the first walk in 2001, there have been over a hundred walks that have taken place all over the nation to date.

DeSales University's PACE team was established in May 2004. The DeSales PACE team consists of eight certified students who assist in peer counseling on campus and talk with other students on issues such as alcohol, sexual assault, relationships, time management and health / social education. They also work with high school, middle school and elementary school students to address a variety of topics.
