DeSales University Names Employees of the Year

DeSales University has named Joseph Horwath, University electrician, and Thomas Mantoni, DeSales University registrar, as Employees of the Year for 2008.  Horwath received the 2008 Support Staff Employee of the Year award. Mantoni received the 2008 Professional Staff Employee of the Year award. Horwath and Montoni were recognized for their years of service and contributions to the University's success, during the Service Excellence Dinner held on the DeSales campus on April 9.

The Employee of the Year awards are given annually to a professional and a support staff member in recognition of outstanding service.  Recipients are distinguished for their commitment to the University's mission, witness to the values for which the University stands, and service marked by such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude and creativity in the work place.

Horwath joined the staff at DeSales University in 1982, after working at Bethlehem Fabricators as a master electrician.  He graduated from Liberty High School in 1966. He attended Clarion State College for one year, before enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. He attended the nuclear power training unit and served in the Navy for six years. Currently, he resides in Bethlehem with Theresa, his wife of 40 years. They are the parents of three children and three grandchildren.

"I feel very honored to be named employee of the year because it shows me that hard work and perseverance do pay off," said Horwath.  "I am honored to serve the DeSales community. Although you might think your daily work is just routine, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction you get from doing what needs to be done to the best of your ability and as requested is gratifying."

Mantoni joined the the DeSales staff in 1998. A graduate of Phillipsburg Catholic High School in 1975, he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from Widener University in 1979, and a master's degree in public administration from Lehigh University in 1993.  Prior to DeSales, he served as assistant director of admissions and assistant registrar at Northampton Community College. Earlier, he was assistant director of admissions at Centenary College. He began his career in higher education as an admissions counselor at Widener University.

He has served on the Executive Board of the Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers and the Professional Staff Development Committee of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers. A resident of Easton, he enjoys spending time with family, friends and his dogs, China Rose, Nick and Max. His hobbies include raising and showing the dog breed Chow Chow's, reading, and traveling.

"This honor means a great deal to me. Every member of our staff strives to make the registrar's office the best it can be and it is fantastic to be acknowledged in this manner," said Mantoni. "DeSales employs many talented professionals committed to excellence and I am therefore extremely honored to be selected from this group for this wonderful award."
