DeSales Baseball #6 Seed to Face #3 Seed The College of New Jersey in 2008 NCAA Regional Tournament
DeSales University baseball team was named the #6 seed in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament and will face third seeded, The College of New Jersey, in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Regional Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 pm at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ.
Joining the Bulldogs (24-8-1) at the eight-team regional will be the #1 seed and tournament host Kean University (35-9) as they will take on #8 seed Gwynedd-Mercy College (21-18) at 1:15 pm on Wednesday. The opening day's first game features the #4 seed PSU-Behrend (34-10) taking on the #5 seed Messiah College (27-16) at 10:00 am, the Bulldogs (24-18-1) meet the Lions (28-10) at 4:30 pm and the #2 seed Rowan University (30-12) finishes up the day with a matchup against the #7 seed Keystone College (30-10) at 7:45 pm.
The entire tournament takes place at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ. Ticket prices for the event will be $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students/seniors/youth children. There will also be a $5.00 parking fee if you park in the garage near the stadium.
The Bulldogs are returning to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the program's history and for the first time in the last three years after making six straight appearances from 2000-05. DSU holds an 11-14 overall record in the NCAA Tournament including one appearance in the College World Series in 2003 when they went 4-0 in the regional tournament. Head Coach Tim Neiman is in his 19th year at the helm of the Bulldogs and enters the NCAA Tournament with a 473-254-4 (.650) overall record. He is all-time winningest coach in DeSales history (all sports) and is the only coach with 400+ career wins at DeSales.
DSU enters the tournament having won its eighth Freedom Conference Championship and the first in the last three years after winning six straight conference titles from 2000-05. The Bulldogs have won six straight games entering the "big dance" and are 11-2 over their last 13 games. DeSales is hitting .332, has 128 stolen bases and is averaging 7.9 runs per game. DSU features a balanced offensive attack with seven players knocking in 20+ runs and six players with 30+ runs scored.
Leading the offensive attack are seniors Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) and Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) batting .365 and .361 respectively. Heard has a team-high 23 stolen bases and has scored 32 runs, while Matejicka leads the team with 43 RBI's and 15 doubles. Sophomore Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) is batting .363 and has 10 doubles, 27 RBI's and 11 stolen bases, while junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) is hitting .338 with a team-high eight home runs and 37 runs batted in.
On the mound sophomore closer Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) has been the Bulldogs top pitcher all season posting a team-low 2.97 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched. He has nine saves on the season and opponents are batting just .220 off him. Sophomore Charles Swenson (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) is 3-4 with a 3.33 ERA in nine starts and 51.1 innings pitched and junior Chris Brian (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Township) is 5-1 with a 4.44 ERA in 10 starts and 46.2 innings pitched. Freshman Jeffrey Pinto (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) has also pitched well out of the pen posting a 3.62 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched.
