Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary, self-designed major meant for students with broad, diverse interests in the liberal arts. The major is intentionally structured to cross the traditional boundaries of academic disciplines in order to address the student's specific intellectual and vocational needs. The Liberal Studies major "customizes" a student's education, ensuring rigorous standards within a carefully constructed yet flexible framework.
Each incoming student works closely with the Chair of Liberal Studies, Dr. Dennis Varley, in designing his or her individual course of studies. Each program must include courses in English, history, philosophy, fine arts, foreign language, and social sciences, such as political science and economics. Liberal Studies majors are encouraged to think creatively in selecting their elective courses. Study abroad and internships are highly recommended.
