Magdalene Riggins Named to Executive Board of Catholic Campus Ministry Association
Magdalene Riggins, assistant director of campus ministry at DeSales, has been named to the Executive Board of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association (CCMA), the national organization for Catholic campus ministers.
As a member of the board, Riggins will act as an advocate for campus ministers and serve as a liaison to one of the standing committees of CCMA. She also will assist with initiatives and strategic direction of the organization's long range plan. Riggins will serve a one-year term, which was effective as of May 2008.
According to Riggins, a candidate for the Executive Board can be selected by current board members who choose from campus ministers nationwide they believe will be positive additions and serve the organization well. Riggins was invited to consider the nomination to the Executive Board of CCMA by Jeff Klein, campus minister at the University of Pennsylvania and a current board member.
Klein conducted a lengthy phone interview with Riggins, after which she drafted and submitted a written statement of her qualifications. At a meeting of the Executive Board, members reviewed her statement and then selected Riggins to serve a one-year term.
"The appointment is a wonderful honor," said Riggins. "I am grateful for the support I have received from Fr. John Hanley, director of campus ministry at DeSales, and through student affairs. The opportunity to involve myself in not only campus ministry on the DeSales campus, but also in campus ministry on a regional and national level, has been a valuable experience."
A resident of Lehighton, Riggins joined the staff of DeSales University in 2001. She earned a bachelor's degree in theology and philosophy from DeSales, and a master's degree in theology form Villanova University. Since 2003, she has served as chairperson of Pennsylvania Catholic Campus Ministry Association (PCCMA). She also is the co-author of Reverence and Responsibilit: CCMA's Guide to the Code of Ethics.
