New International Business Major at DeSales Prepares Graduates for Complex Global Environment.
With the start of the 2008 - 2009 academic year, DeSales University will offer a new international business major designed to prepare graduates to address the global component of businesses of today and the future.
According to Dr. Christian Buss, associate professor of business at DeSales, and director of the University's new international business program, it is critical that business education develop a global initiative, especially given the problems facing U.S. businesses today.
"International business is an increasingly popular major," said Buss. "Students and prospective students have become increasingly more aware that businesses of today and tomorrow must have an international orientation in order to succeed in the complex global environment."
Buss emphasized that the new international business major at DeSales will drive the international content across the entire business curriculum and have a positive impact on students and graduates. Ultimately, it also will be beneficial to companies in the Lehigh Valley area that wish to expand and add a global component to their business.
"The addition of the new international business major will strengthen the relationship of the University with local and regional business communities," said Buss. "The new linkages to those businesses will have great significance, as it will allow DeSales to become the primary provider of human resources for companies with an international orientation in the area."
The new international business major is designed to meet the University's general liberal arts program requirements. Courses in the required 16 course sequence in the curriculum include global business strategies, international marketing, multinational financial management, international business and legal environment of international trade. The remaining 11 courses for the major are in the general business major curriculum. In addition to the required 16 courses, students must meet the required General Education core.
In addition to Buss, faculty members in the DeSales University Department of Business who will be teaching courses in the new program include Dr. Christopher Cocozza, associate professor and chairperson of the business department, and Dr. David Gilfoil, assistant professor of business, among others.
A member of the DeSales faculty since fall 2006, Buss specializes in international marketing management and serves as an international consultant and trainer, and helps U.S. and European companies develop domestic and international strategic opportunities. Prior to DeSales, he was a professor in the School of Business at the State University of New York, Albany, where he was named professor emeritus in 2004.
Buss also serves on the faculty at the Smith School of the University of Maryland, the Graduate School of Business Administration in Zurich, Switzerland, the Rotterdam School of Management, Leiden University, and the Levin Institute.
In addition, Buss was a columnist on global strategy for the American Business Journals, a chain of weekly business newspapers in the U.S., and contributes free-lance articles to a variety of business publications. He is the author of the forthcoming book, A Business Professor's Guide to Practical Living that answers14 questions posed by the great philosophers for the business professional.
A native of Lancaster, Pa., Buss earned a Ph.D. in marketing from the Wharton School. He and his wife, Elizabeth, currently reside in Allentown.
