Journey To Wellness Fair at DeSales Offers Ways to Promote and Maintain Good Health, Wed. 9/24/08
DeSales University faculty, staff and students will learn how to maintain good health and about the multitude of resources available to them both on and off campus, during the 6th Annual Journey to Wellness Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 24, in the University Center. The event is sponsored by the DeSales Health and Counseling Centers. (Note: Activities offer good visual opportunities. The media is welcome.)
According to Wendy Krisak, assistant director of counseling at DeSales and coordinator of the Character U, DeSales' First year Experience Program, the goal of the event is to bring in community and campus resources in an effort to focus on all aspects of an individual's "wellness."
"Often people think wellness is only about one thing, either how much you weigh, how big your muscles are, or whether you get enough sleep at night," said Krisak. "What we are trying to teach the community is that wellness is also about many other things such as how you spend your time, what career path you choose, what types of relationships you form, and how you choose to take care of the environment."
Andrea Grube, assistant of the DeSales' Health Center, is working with Krisak on this year's program.
During the course of the day, campus, as well as community groups, will provide information on nutrition, exercise programs, healthy life choices, massage, cancer prevention, mental health, among other topics.
Community groups include Always Pretty Salon and Spa, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Body Central Inc., Coca Cola, Crime Victims Council of the Lehigh Valley, Diocese of Allentown Office of Family Life Ministries and Caring Hearts, Lehigh Valley Hospital's Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners, (SAFE) Program, National Alliance of Mental Illness, Northeast Pennsylvania Lion's Eye Bank, Pennsylvania State Police, Sodexho Nutritionist, and Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley.
Campus participants include Academic Resource Center, Athletics, Career Services, Character U, DeSales Campus Ministry, Judicial Affairs, Lisa Bryan, a yoga and Reiki instructor at DeSales, PACE, Trexler Library, University Police's RAD Program, and Wellness Center.
