DeSales Presents Character Quest, Mon., Sept. 29, at Amore Farms
Area middle school students will take part in colorful and inspiring activities, and learn about character development in the process, during DeSales University's Character Quest on Monday, Sept. 29, at Amore Farms in Bath.
The program will be presented in morning and afternoon sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 1:30 p.m. The cost of the event is $2 per participating child. The proceeds will benefit resources for youth development in South Africa. DeSales PACE (Peers Advising, Counseling and Educating) and Character U, the DeSales first-year experience program, are sponsoring the event.
Offered for the first time last year, Character Quest is designed to be educational and entertaining. The program will consist of three segments: a Character Corn Maze, a Pumpkin Patch, and a journey through Puzzle Woods.
"Character Quest provides students with a unique learning experience," said Wendy S. Krisak, assistant director of counseling and director of the First Year Experience Program at DeSales. "The planned activities provide them with an opportunity for character development, to gain nutritional education, to learn about historical figures, to work as a team, and to expand their reasoning skills."
Students will begin with a journey through history in the Character Corn Maze, where they will explore the accomplishments of famous historical figures, such as Joan of Arc, Elizabeth I, Benjamin Franklin, Ghandi, Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa. The character traits range from creativity, resilience and respect, to courage, patience and perseverance.
Following the Corn Maze, students will be transported via hayride to the Pumpkin Patch and then make their way to Puzzle Woods, where they will be challenged with brain teasers. The Quest ends at a straw-bale replica of the new food pyramid that encourages students to learn more about healthy foods. While at the food pyramid, students will have an opportunity to have their photos taken.
According to Krisak, the Character Quest program takes DeSales' award-winning college-based Character U First Year Experience Program and delivers it at a middle school level.
DeSales students and members of PACE will serve as peer mentors for the middle school students. The DeSales students will engage the middle school students in more in-depth discussions on the historical figures and on the related character traits.
