DeSales Tests New Campus Emergency Alert System

A test of the newly installed campus emergency alert system was held on the DeSales University campus yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, October 15. The new system will be used for campus safety situations, including emergencies involving severe weather.

Testing of the "Big Voice," a component of the Campus Emergency Alert System (CEALS), included a series of sound tests that allowed technicians to complete adjustments for volume and clarity, and balance the audio message and the siren. Facilities' personnel and University Police monitored the testing from various vantage points around campus for effectiveness.

As the University builds on the system and develops the alert capability over the next two years, the outdoor alert system will be supplemented with indoor speakers in key locations. This is part of DeSales University's continued efforts to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.

In an actual emergency or during a drill, the Campus E2 system would be activated and those who are enrolled in the system would receive a digital message. The University is in the process of expanding its wireless and cell connectivity. Campus E2 enrollment is via: www.e2campus.com/my/desales/signup.htm; please, call the University Police at ext. 1837, if you have questions about enrollment.

Also in the event of a real emergency or a drill, members of the DeSales community can be counted on to pass the word to friends and colleagues to insure the safety of everyone who lives and works on campus.

For more information, or  if there are any questions or concerns regarding the new campus alert system and emergency preparedness at the University, please contact Fr. Mark F. Plaushin, OSFS, director of emergency preparedness planning at DeSales University, at ext. 2242 or at mark.plaushin@desales.edu.
