The Salesian Center for Faith and Culture will host a screening of the documentary film "I.O.U.S.A. - One Nation, Under Stress, In Debt," at 4 p.m., Wednesday, December 3 in the Priscilla Payne Hurd Science Center. The movie screening will be followed by an audience discussion led byexpert panelists including DeSales faculty members, Dr. Amy Scott, assistant professor of economics, and Dr. Brian Kane, professor of theoligcal ethics, and also Tom Cichocki, a vice president with Citi/Smith Barney. The event is free and open to the public.
Released at the Sundance Film Festival to much fanfare and critical acclaim, the movie examines the consequences faced by the citizens of the United States as the national debt continues to grow at its current pace and offers solutions for the future. The movie includes interviews with American taxpayers, as well as individuals with past and present influence and power over the financial system in the United States.
Among those featured in the film are: billionaire investor Warren Buffett; former chair of the federal reserve under George W. Bush, Alan Greenspan; former United States Secretary of the Treasury, Paul O'Neill; Robert Rubin, director and senior counsel to CitiGroup; and Paul Volcker, former chair of the federal reserve under Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan; David Walker of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which boasts a $1 billion endowment to address fiscal sustainability issues related to federal deficits; and Bob Bixby of the Concord Coalition, an advocacy group whose mission is to end deficit spending and promote a balanced budget in the U.S. federal government.
Reuters said the movie is "to the US economy what 'An Inconvenient Truth' was to the environment," while Roger Ebert says the film finally explains the national debt. The film is produced and directed by husband and wife team Patrick Creadon and Christine O'Malley.
