Effective Online Learning Strategies

Bookmark and Share

Your attitude, learning style, skills, and work habits all contribute to a successful online learning experience.

Attitudes

  • Open-minded, flexible, curious, committed, motivated, independent
  • These attitudes will serve you well when you are tempted to put off your course work, have encountered technical problems, are communicating with other students, and have an important course deadline to meet.

Learning Styles

  • Active learner, visual learning style
  • Active learners take initiative, get involved and ask questions. Visual learners must see to understand and learn best by reading and watching. They convert what they hear and read into images. Since online learning emphasizes reading and writing, having this dominant learning style is beneficial. Remember, online learning is NOT for everyone.

Skills

  • Reading, writing, computer, time management, problem-solving, teamwork and research
  • Making ideas visible via clear writing, discussion board postings and chats is important. Being assertive to communicate needs and following a schedule will aid you in completing assignments.

Work Habits

  • Log in regularly to participate in course, use technology properly, take notes as you study, practice concepts, plan time to study and complete assignments, communicate problems to instructor promptly, work with others
  • These work habits will enable you to make quality contributions in your course. You will have both the freedom and responsibility to commit to your time to at least six (6) hours a week consistently.
