A WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Pink Zone to raise cancer awareness will be held in Billera Hall at DeSales on Wednesday, February 4. The event will take place during the women's and men's basketball games between DeSales and Wilkes universities. The women's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the men's at 8:00 p.m. Hosted by the DeSales University Sport Management Society and the DeSales Athletics Department, all proceeds and donations will benefit Lehigh Valley Breast Health Services. The cost of admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens (age 55 and older), and $2 for students with DeSales ID. Pink attire and accessories are encouraged.
Festivities during both halftime breaks will include a raffle of DeSales logo items and Starters Pub half court shots where fans can win a $25 gift certificate for Starters. During the games, raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win a DeSales or Wilkes merchandise basket, which include a t-shirt signed by each team.
Gracia Perilli, assistant director of athletics at DeSales, helped coordinate the DeSales event. According to Perilli, over an eight-year period ending in 2008, about $15,000 was raised at DeSales events and donated to local organizations supporting cancer research.
The WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
Formerly known as "Think Pink," the WBCA Pink Zone was established in 2007, as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. More than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research nationwide.
