DeSales Alumnus and PACE Team honored at Regional Convention

Chad Serfass, resident hall director and assistant coordinator of Character U, DeSales University's First Year Experience Program, received the Outstanding Alumni award at the 2009 General Assembly of The Bacchus Network, the regional convention of peer educators and advisors, held at the University of Scranton on February 28.

Serfass, who graduated from DeSales in 2007 with a degree in elementary education, is an advisor of the DeSales University PACE (Peer Advising, Counseling and Educating) program.

As a member of The Bacchus Network, DeSales is in Region 11, which includes all of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and also belongs to a national and international group of approximately 1,000 schools.

During the convention, the DeSales PACE Team also was selected to present two of their programs: "overXposed" and "The Promise of Sleep."

The "OverXposed" program explores the benefits and pitfalls of online communication, and how technology inhibits face-to-face communication. Members of PACE discuss how privacy settings on Facebook and MySpace can be deceiving. Also, they illustrate how a person's image and online profile is available for everyone in the general public to view. In addition, they share the concern that online communication may inhibit someone from following their passions.

The "Promise of Sleep" program seeks to educate students about the importance of rest for the human body, and that it applies to the quality and frequency of sleep, as well as the amount of sleep.

Established in May 2004, the DeSales PACE team consists of eight Bacchus certified students who assist in peer counseling on campus and talk with other students on issues such as alcohol, sexual assault, relationships, time management and health / social education. They also work with high school, middle school and elementary school students to address a variety of topics.

The DeSales PACE Team also was selected to present two of their programs: "overXposed" and "The Promise of Sleep."

Dr. Gregg Amore, director of the DeSales University Counseling Center, nominated Serfass for the Award of Outstanding New Alumnus. According to Amore, Serfass has been a major contributor to the success of the PACE organization since its inception in 2004, and played a key role in the group's 10 Bacchus awards and five presentations.

"Being an education major, Chad brought skills and personality to the table that helped form the initial foundation of PACE," said Amore. "During the 2004 - 2005 academic year, the PACE team began to formulate its identity and goals. Chad was instrumental in the original formation, identity, and delivery of the program."

"It is an honor to receive such an exceptional award," said Serfass, of Lehighton, Pa. "It is so gratifying to see PACE get well deserved regional and national recognition."

According to Serfass, who has assumed the role of co-advisor with PACE, the organization has made great strides over the past few years and its future looks very promising.

"I am proud to see how members of the DeSales PACE team have grown as individuals and peer educators in recent years," said Serfass. "I am confident they will continue to succeed."
