(April 14, 2009) – The DeSales University Colleges Against Cancer Chapter will host its annual Relay for Life walk-a-thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS) beginning at 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 17, until noon, Saturday, April 18. Registration for the 18-hour event will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
All proceeds from the event, food and activities will go to the ACS to fund cancer research, educational programs about cancer awareness, and the treatments of cancer patients. The DeSales University Colleges Against Cancer’s goal is to raise $40,000.
Festivities in the Mall area outside the McShea Student Center during the walking event will include a luminaria ceremony and a Fight Back Ceremony featuring the personal reflections of a cancer survivor. There also will be games, food and live music.
Participants will form teams with at least one member walking around the track for the full duration of the event.
At dusk, there will be a luminaria ceremony. Luminaries will be lighted in honor of those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Candles in white bags will line the relay track, with each one bearing the name of a loved one. This ceremony of light symbolizes the hope and courage needed to continue the fight against cancer.
At midnight, there will be a Fight Back Ceremony during which cancer survivor, Gerard Longo, will speak about his personal experience.
Relay for Life began in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt took a 24-hour run around a track in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Klatt ran a total of 83 miles and raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. The year following, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt in the overnight event, forming Relay for Life. Now, more than 4,200 relays are held nationwide every year, including at numerous colleges, such as the University of Illinois and Bloomsburg University.
