Denise Shive, facilities department coordinator, and Linda Bell, ACCESS director for the Easton area campus, were honored for their outstanding service to the University, at the annual Service Excellence Dinner on April 21.
A long-standing tradition at DeSales, the spring event publicly acknowledges staff members who have contributed to its success and honors select staff members who have distinguished themselves through service to the University. It also recognizes those who are celebrating a number of years of service to DeSales.
Denise Shive, the 2009 Support Staff Employee of the Year, and Linda Bell, the 2009 Professional Staff Employee of the Year, were recognized for their outstanding service to DeSales. Recipients of the University’s staff awards are distinguished for their commitment to the University's mission, witness to the values for which the University stands, and service marked by such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude and creativity in the work place.
Shive joined the DeSales staff in 1999, as a secretary in the facilities department. In 2008, she was promoted to the position of facilities department coordinator. Currently a resident of Upper Saucon Township, Shive was raised in the Lehigh and Bucks County areas. She received her associate’s degree in legal secretarial science at Lehigh County Community College. Prior to DeSales, she worked for Lehigh County in the district justice system until the birth of her first son. After the birth of her second child, she returned to work part-time as an administrative assistant to the owners of the Inn of the Falcon. In her free time, Shive enjoys gardening, walking, and going to the occasional flea market or antique store.
“When Father O’Connor called and said that I received the award, I was in shock and can’t remember what I said to him,” said Shive. “I feel very honored. DeSales is a wonderful environment to work in.”
Bell joined the DeSales staff in June 1991, as program coordinator with the ACCESS Program of Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales. The eldest of four daughters, she graduated from Souderton Area High School and attended Lycoming College where she majored in psychology. After graduating from Lycoming, she attended Penn State where she received her M.Ed. in counselor education. After
completing her master’s degree, Bell worked at Williamsport Area Community College (now Penn College of Technology) in their Adult Career and Education Services (ACES) program. After moving to New Jersey, she worked part-time for Jointure for Community Adult Education, before taking the position at DeSales.
Bell has been married to husband Steve Bell for 27 seven years. They are the parents of three children, Justin, 25, Mike, 21, and Erin, 18. Bell currently resides in Forks Township. She enjoys music, and singing and playing the organ.
“Working in ACCESS and at an extension campus means interacting with many different offices, often by phone and email. I have worked with and met wonderful people at DeSales,” said Bell. “Receiving this award is truly an honor. I feel blessed to be part of the DeSales community.”
