(July 2009) – Peter Gary Confalone, DeSales University senior with dual majors in sports management and law & society, has been named the 2009 - 2010 William G. McGowan Scholar. The McGowan Charitable Fund awarded one tuition scholarship – either undergraduate or graduate – to each school selected to participate. More than 60 colleges and universities were invited to take part in the 2009 – 2010 McGowan Scholars program.
McGowan Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic performance, grade point average, a submitted essay, extracurricular activities, and other selection criteria. Confalone, of Shillington, Pa., is the fifth DeSales student to receive the scholarship.
“I am both grateful and excited about winning the prestigious McGowan Scholarship,” said Confalone. “It has been a meaningful experience, one that will have a positive impact on my future, as I prepare for graduate school and plan my professional career.”
Confalone, a Dean’s List student with a 3.9 GPA, has been active in a variety of campus activities including the DeSales Admissions Welcoming Guides (DAWGS), the Sport Management Society, the Mock Trial Club, and as student body treasurer during the 2008 – 2009 academic year. He will serve as student body president for the 2009 – 2010 academic year.
Also, he works with the sports information director at DeSales at athletic contests and record statistics.
In addition, Confalone has completed three internship experiences. The first one was in community relations and promotions with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, during the inaugural season. The second internship was with Todd Crannell, founder and president of Q2 Sports and Entertainment, learning the agency process involved in recruiting clients for Crannell’s NFL representation division. The third one, currently in progress in Melbourne Beach, Florida, is in sales and marketing with ASA Entertainment, a sports marketing company that produces action sports events, where he is working on sales outreach and research, graphic design, event planning and organization.
The son of Gary and Jackie Confalone, of Shillington, Pa., Confalone is interested in law, entrepreneurship and sports business and plans to pursue graduate work in business and also attend law school, in the hopes of earning a J.D. / M.B.A. dual degree. His long-range goal is to one day have his own sports agency.
Prior to Confalone, past McGowan Scholarship recipients from DeSales include: Stacy Lewandowski ’09, of Toms River, N.J., who earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance; Tigh Savercool ‘08, of Millerstown, Pa., who earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management and finance; Phillip Yetter ’07, of Saylorsburg, Pa., who earned a bachelor’s degree in management and finance, and Glenn Berdela, Jr., ’06, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., who earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and management information technology.
