(September 29, 2007) – The DeSales University athletic department would like to announce the induction of four new members, Christa (Hannis) Ehl, ’97, Larry Lowry, ’91, Carl Doug Blessing, ’82, and Fr. Daniel G. Gambet, OSFS at its Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday, September 25th.
Each inductee has made an everlasting impression on DeSales University athletics and will join current members Dr. John “Coach” Compardo, Lynn Butler-Tubman ‘ 87, Tony Mazzeo ’72, Dennis Ramella ’73, Tom Shirley ’76, Tina Costello ’88, Tim Riggs ’91, Bob Koch ’69, John Ward ’89, Brian Manning ’97, Jamie (Bicking) Kofalt ’87, Jim Seaton ’78, Barbara Thomas ’96, Rich DeLeo ’81, Jamie Hibell ’97, Glenn Kushma ’96, Jerry Mayza ’87, Susan (Stagliano) O’Mara ’96, Karin Povish ’89, Maureen (Shaughnessy) Toy ’81, John Ward ’89, John Weiland ’77, and Vince Yost ’79, into this celebrated group.
Ehl (Emmaus, PA) joins the DSU Hall of Fame as a four-year member of the volleyball team. She was named the Female Athlete of the Year in 1994-95 and in 1996 she was named to the AVCA Mid-Atlantic All Region Team. Ehl currently ranks as the all-time leader in sets played (442), kills (1,617), kills per game (3.66 KPG), total attacks (3,278), hitting percentage (.379), and block assists (244). She is also eighth all-time in digs (1,017), second in service aces (278), second in solo blocks (166) and second all-time in total blocks (410).
Lowry (Sellersville, PA) was a standout player for both the men’s soccer and men’s basketball team. As a goalie in soccer, he is second all-time in goals against average (1.29) and was selected to the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Soccer Team in 1998. As a basketball player, he scored 884 career points, which ranks for 24th all-time and is also ranked among the top 20 all-time in rebounds (13th), blocked shots (9th), field goal percentage (10th), and double-doubles (8th). Lowry is a two-time DeSales University Male Athlete of the Year, earning the honor in 1989-90 and 1990-91 and was part of the first men’s basketball team to win 20+ games in a season.
Blessing (Reading, PA) played for the men’s basketball team for four years and was team co-captain as a senior. He owns three school-records, including most rebounds in a season (348; 1981-82), most double-doubles in a season (12; 1980-81), and best field goal percentage in a season (66.5%; 1980-81) and is all-time leader in career rebounds with 877. Blessing, who was the Male Athlete of the Year in 1981-82, also ranks 15th all-time in scoring (1,131 points) and is also the all-time leader in field goal percentage converting 62.9 percent of his career attempts.
Fr. Gambet served DeSales University as president for 21 years from 1978-99. During his time as the president he, along with Athletic Director Tom Shirley, began the process of gaining membership in the NCAA Division III as an independent. Under Fr. Gambet’s leadership the Bulldogs later secured membership into the ESAC (Eastern States Athletic Conference), followed by the PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference), and then into the MAC (Middle Atlantic Conference) in 1997-98 where DeSales currently competes and has won 20 team conference championships since joining.
