Latino Students in Hispanic Initiative Summer Academic Program at DeSales Look to the Future
Latino students from area middle and high schools will explore the far-reaching possibilities of college, during the Hispanic Initiative Summer Academic Enrichment Program at DeSales University. The weeklong resident camps include a High School Program, June 13 to 20, and a Middle School Program, June 20 to 25, which provide academic enrichment integrated with cultural and social activities. In this summer's program, high school students will design and build go carts. Middle school students will study the cultures and cuisine of various Latin countries. About 40 students will take part in each program.
During the week, students will take part in a variety of workshops. Members of the DeSales faculty will be conducting classes. Full-time DeSales students will be serving as counselors. Class times are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All workshops will be held in Dooling Hall, unless otherwise noted.
In addition to workshops, students will be involved with recreational activities, such as a dance, picnic, and T-Shirt design contest. They also will take field trips to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and to a production of the Shakespeare Festival.
Established by DeSales in 1994, the Hispanic Initiative Summer Academic Enrichment Program has three primary goals. They are: to increase graduation rates among Latino students in local schools; to increase enrollment and retention of Latino students in college, and to increase the pool of college-educated Latinos in the Lehigh Valley workforce.
DeSales invites prospective Latino students to the program each year through brochures and information sent to guidance counselors at area middle and high schools. Guidance counselors recommend students, who apply with a letter of support from their schools. Students are encouraged and are given the opportunity to return to the program each summer. To date, more than 575 Latino students have attended the Summer Academic enrichment Program.
For more information on the program, including a schedule of activities, please contact Tiffany Bandics, assistant director of enrollment outreach programs at DeSales University, at 610-282-1100, ext. 1396.
