Tony Award Winner Alice Ripley to appear in Actors Studio at DeSales

Tony Award Winner Alice Ripley to Appear in Actors Studio at DeSalesThe DeSales University Performing and Fine Arts Department is pleased to announce that Alice Ripley, star of the Broadway hit Next To Normal and current Tony Award winner as Best Actress in a Musical will appear on campus on at 5 p.m., Wednesday, November 11, 2009, in an “Actors Studio with Alice Ripley” at the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts.

Appearing on stage with department chair John Bell, Ripley will discuss her professional journey, he working process as a singing actor, and field questions from the assembled student audience. She’ll close her appearance singing a short set of pop covers and musical theatre songs.

“I’m so pleased the Alice accepted our invitation. When you’re performing eight shows a week in a production as strenuous as Next To Normal, you imagine the actor would want to do nothing on their one day off each week but sleep and rest their voice. That Alice was willing to come and meet informally with our students and even sing a bit, is amazing,” says Bell.

Alice Ripley received the 2009 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Diana in Next to Normal. She also received the Helen Hayes Award as well as Drama Desk and outer Critics Circle nominations. She was in the original Broadway casts of Side Show, The Rocky Horror Show, James Joyce’s The Dead, Sunset Boulevard, and The Who’s Tommy. She also appeared on Broadway and on a national tour in Les Misérables. She can be heard on recordings such as Next to Normal, Little Fish, Skinner/Ripley: Raw at Town Hall, Sondheim: the Stephen Sondheim Album, Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens, The Rocky Horror Show, The Stephen Schwartz Album, Duets, Unsuspecting Hearts, Side Show, and The Who’s Tommy. With her band RIPLEY, Alice has written and produced albums Everything’s Fine, Ripley EP, and Outtasite.
